"I stood there and saw her body float downstream" | The unsolved case of Janet Murgatroyd

On Saturday the 15th of June, 1996, a pair of female students were enjoying a night out at local pubs in the north west city of Preston. Sadly, only one of them made it home safely, as the other was found floating face-down in a local river the following day.

Despite having sustained a brutal physical attack, the victim was in fact still alive at the time she was placed into the water. Unable to move, she ultimately drowned.

A widespread investigation uncovered CCTV of the victim shortly before meeting her untimely demise, and police were assisted by several key witnesses that came forward believing they’d seen the culprit.

Three suspects would go on to be identified, including; The victim’s abusive ex-boyfriend. A second man who later admitted to robbing the victim prior to the murder. And a third man who admitted to the crime, before retracting his confession.
