The last vestige of Chicago and Northwestern's once-major railroading operation is a small but busy yard along the banks of the Mississippi River in Winona, Minnesota.
Trackage rights on the old Milwaukee Road (now CPKC) are the only way in and out for this job. The CNW bridge to Winona was shut down long ago, and the railroad itself is lost to the ages. So, too, is the once-iconic "Alco Line" that connected here for the trip to and from South Dakota.
