The second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita is Sankhya Yoga. This is the most important chapter of the Bhagavad Gita as Lord Krishna condenses the teachings of the entire Gita in this chapter. This chapter is the essence of the entire Gita. Sankhya Yoga can be categorized into 4 main topics - 1. Arjuna completely surrenders himself to Lord Krishna and accepts his position as a disciple and Krishna as his Guru. He requests Krishna to guide him on how to dismiss his sorrow. 2. Explanation of the main cause of all grief, which is ignorance of the true nature of Self. 3. Karma Yoga - the discipline of selfless action without being attached to its fruits. 4. Description of a Perfect Man - One whose mind is steady and one-pointed.

To alleviate Arjuna's grief, Lord Krishna describes the knowledge of birth and death as follows.

Atha cainaṁ nityajātaṁ nityaṁ vā man'yasē mr̥tam ।
tathāpi tvaṁ mahābāhō naivaṁ śōcitumar'hasi ।। 26।।

Even if you think, ‘The soul is subject to repeated births and deaths’, it is not appropriate to grieve like this, even if you have great arms.
Indian philosophy, historically, has twelve traditions. One of these six, accepted the Vedas as the standard. Hence, they are called theistic visions.

Jātasya hi dhruvō mr̥tyuḥ dhruvaṁ janma mr̥tasya ca ।
tasmādaparihāryēఽrthē na tvaṁ śōcitumar'hasi ।। 27।।

The one who is born must die .. The one who dies must be born again. So, for the inevitable, you do not want to grieve.

Avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyaktamadhyāni bhārata ।
avyaktanidhanān'yēva tatra kā paridēvanā ।। 28।।

O Bharata Vamsiyuda .. All created beings, manifest before birth, manifest during life, reborn after death, manifest. So, why grieve?

Āścaryavatpaśyati kaścidēnam
āścaryavadvadati tathaiva cān'yaḥ ।
āścaryavaccainaman'yaḥ śr̥ṇōti
śrutvāpyēnaṁ vēda na caiva kaścit ।। 29।।

Some see this soul as astonishing, some describe it as astonishing, some hear that the soul is astonished, and others, even after hearing it, do not understand anything about it.

Dēhī nityamavadhyōఽyaṁ dēhē sarvasya bhārata ।
tasmāt sarvāṇi bhūtāni na tvaṁ śōcitumar'hasi ।। 30।।

O Arjuna, the soul that is in the body is immortal. So, even about any creature, you should not grieve.

Svadharmamapi cāvēkṣya na vikampitumar'hasi ।
dharmyād'dhi yud'dhāccrēyōఽn'yat kṣatriyasya na vidyatē ।। 31।।

Furthermore, following your Kshatriya Swadharma, you should not move. In fact for a Kshatriya, there is no duty beyond that to wage war for the preservation of Dharma.

Swadharma is the duty of a person according to the Vedas. There are two types of swadharmas.

'Para Dharma' means spiritual functions, and 'Apara Dharma' means worldly functions. When one thinks of oneself as a soul, the duty to do is to love and serve God with devotion.

This is called 'para dharma'. But, since a large percentage of mankind do not have this spiritual dimension, the Vedas prescribe duties, even for those who consider themselves to be bodies.
These virtues are defined according to a person's color and caste. These are called apara dharma, or worldly duties.
When understanding the Bhagavad Gita, and the Vedic philosophies, one must remember the difference between spiritual functions, and worldly functions.
Since Arjuna is a warrior by profession, fighting for the preservation of Dharma is his profession as a warrior. That is what Lord Krishna reminds Arjuna.
