On May 29th, 2025, I spent the day in Waterloo in search of the endangered Iowa Northern F40M-2F’s. After shooting the Iowa Northern, Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern 667 began working some of the industries on the west side of Waterloo. Running as L562, this EJ&E locomotive is one of a handful of SD38-2’s still wearing orange on the CN roster. The local worked Con Agra, the interchange yard, and the Alter scrap yard. The spur which Alter is in is along WCF&N Avenue, and the track is the original interurban mainline up to Waverly. This line doesn’t get served very often, so it was a treat to see the train work there. The evening ended with the arrival of L570 from Fort Dodge, lead by CN 8952, the Grand Trunk heritage unit. A fun evening with some rare moves around Waterloo.
