Al Stewart did some good stuff. In the later 1970s. “Love Chronicles” was recorded and released in 1969. Jimmy Page does some excellent guitar through this supposed magna opus, mainly fills between some of the 187 verses as Stewart whines about every fricking girl he ever knew. Eighteen minutes long, Page only gets a couple spots where he can through in two short 20-something second solos. One is 9:47 in, the other at the 14:25 mark.
Academically, it’s interesting to hear the different sounds Jimmy creates, and it’s especially great to hear him use the wah-wah. Page also plays a lot of nice stuff behind the vocals through some parts of this interminable track, a technique he incorporated rather nicely into “Ramble On” off Led Zeppelin II.
Though Jimmy Page’s talents are generally wasted here, we think it’s worthy to note that when Al Stewart did produce some decent albums (Year of The Cat and Time Passages) they were kinda acoustic based with electric guitar layered over. Tough to imagine he didn’t pick that up from Jimmy Page and Led Zep.
