Welcome to our Swedish home in the forest! In this video, you'll see me and my husband Sander chopping wood for our winter supply, while our lovely chickens roam free in the background. If you're also a wood chopper or want to learn how to do it properly, stick around as I share some tips and tricks that have worked for us.
First of all, choosing the right tools is crucial. When selecting your equipment, make sure they're comfortable and safe to use, and sharpen them regularly to avoid accidents. Another thing to keep in mind is the proper technique. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your dominant foot slightly forward. Hold the tool with both hands, placing one hand at the bottom of the handle and the other hand slightly above it. Aim for the center of the log, and swing the axe or maul in an arc motion, letting gravity do most of the work. Repeat until the log is split into manageable pieces. Always wear protective gear like gloves, boots, and goggles, and don't chop alone in case of an emergency.
Finally, consider the season and the storage of your firewood. Choose dry and seasoned wood for optimal heat output and less smoke. Stack your woodpile in a dry and well-ventilated area, protected from the elements and pests. Use a cover or tarp if necessary.
Thanks for watching, and I hope these tips help you become a better wood chopper! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more (semi) homesteading content. About:
Hi everyone! My name is Elcke and together with my two loved ones I moved from The Netherlands to the beautiful south of Sweden (Småland). We were lucky enough to buy a 19th century cottage in the middle of the Swedish forest. Here we made the decision to live life a bit more slow, and more in line with nature. By capturing the four seasons, our daily life, and our adventures we hope to bring you a moment of zen, enjoyment and the time to sit back and relax.
