Biking the Western Maryland Rail Trail - Big Pool, Maryland (GoPro Hyperlapse)

Come on a bike ride with me on the Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT)! I shot this video using my GoPro HERO13. The Western Maryland Rail Trail is 28 miles long and connects Big Pool, MD to Little Orleans, MD.

I started my ride from the trailhead parking lot in Big Pool, MD - I went during the week, so parking was not an issue and the lot itself has a good number of spaces (I imagine it probably fills up on the weekends). There are also restrooms here, which is very convenient for both before and after riding the trail. From the Big Pool parking lot I headed northwest and after about 10 miles I passed through the town of Hancock. It was early in the week when I did my ride, so many of the restaurants and businesses were closed; however, if I came back on the weekend I saw a couple restaurants along the trail that looked like they'd be worth checking out.

Once through Hancock, I continued on the trail for another 14 miles. At around Mile Marker 24, I reached the Indigo Tunnel. The tunnel was closed in 2010 to protect bats living inside it (there is some interesting reading on this that you can find on Google) and a bypass around the tunnel was constructed. Up until this point in the ride, the WMRT paralleled the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath; however, the bypass around the Indigo Tunnel actually plops you on the C&O for ~2 miles (this is where the trail becomes unpaved). At around Mile Marker 27 I was able to return to the final (paved) 1-mile stretch of the WMRT, which unceremoniously ends at the closed High Bridge that stretches across the Potomac River.

The WMRT is 28 miles one way. I did this trail as an out-and-back ride, so overall it came out to right around 56 miles. I did this ride in October, so as you can see from the video, the fall foliage and scenery (especially on the western portion of the trail) were beautiful.
