A Day Out with Thomas on the Nene Valley Railway | 26th July 2025

A very busy Saturday on the Nene Valley Railway in Cambridgeshire West of East Anglia, as we have a day out to see Thomas the number 1 blue tank engine!

We begin at Overton Ferry Meadows Station by taking the diesel train, hauled by a Class 14 Teddy Bear diesel with continental coaches to Peterborough Nene Valley and Wansford.

At Wansford Station in Stibbington, we see all the locomotives both at the station platform and at the locomotive depot, we also see 70000 'Britannia' on stand, after the locomotive failed at Peterborough mainline station the previous three days on a railtour from London Kings Cross to York and back, and we also see 60163 'Tornado' awaiting it's next mainline movement to Derby for the Rail 200 Greatest Gathering.

We then take the shuttle train hauled by Thomas the Tank Engine, along his branch line from Wansford to Yarwell Junction and back, Thomas then runs around at Wansford ready for his next trains before we take the Teddy Bear diesels train back to Ferry Meadows.

This was also Thomas's big 80th anniversary, and this Hudswell Clarke Thomas locomotive was built in 1947, named "Thomas" by the Rev. W. Awdry and was purchased by the Peterborough Railway Society in 1973, and this Thomas has been based at the Nene Valley Railway ever since.
