On the Iberian peninsula in northwestern Spain, just to the east of Galecia is Bierzo, home to this week's wine made from the native Spanish red grape varietal, Mencía. While it can also be found in Portugal, most of the plantings are in Spain. These wines tends to be a good value, best consumed young, and have some refreshing acidity, moderate tannins and body. The fruits can range from red to dark berries, while flowery aromas and earthy and vegetal components give the wine an Old World feel.
In this week's tip of the week we answer some questions like, why doesn't wine taste like grapes? How is it wine can taste like cherries, or blackberries, or green bell pepper? What is going on with these aroma and flavor compounds? Does it have anything to do with methoxypryazines? (of course you were wondering that last question.)
