The Pectoralis Major is an important muscle to treat when working with many shoulder and cervical (neck) pain patterns and injuries. Trigger points in this muscle can be the cause of shoulder pain, breast pain, chest pain and can even refer down the arm mimicking cardiogenic pain. It can also frequently be a component of pain due to its influence on the mobility and balance of the shoulder girdle and its tendency to be in a shortened position in many of neck and shoulder problems.
Acupuncture techniques need to be performed with caution as this muscle overlies the pleural cavity and improper technique can enter the pleural cavity. This video shows a safe approach for this muscle, but the practitioner must have a good command of palpation and ability to transfer this palpation to the needle technique. Do not perform this technique if you are not adequately trained and comfortable with needling over the ribcage.
For practitioners of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, this muscle is part of many sinew channels (jingjin). The clavicular head is part of the Lung sinew channel, the sternal head is part of the Heart sinew channel, and the lowest costal and abominal fibers are part of the Pericardium sinew channel.
