I'm turning this desert into a forest, and tonight I'm discovering what's already thriving here.

Using a bat detector in my canyon at sunset, I identified 8 different bat species including tricolored bats, canyon bats, pallid bats, and multiple types of myotis—proving the Chihuahuan Desert is the most biodiverse desert in the hemisphere.

The connection between bats and desert restoration runs deeper than you might think. Long-nosed bats depend on agave nectar for survival, and agave depends on these bats for pollination.

As I plant more agave species like Agave salmiana and Agave americana across the ranch, I'm not just building my desert forest—I'm supporting critical migratory pathways for endangered bat populations.

Today I explore potential roosts in the canyon walls, set up my bat detector in the wind shadow of the buildings, and watch these incredible creatures hunt insects in real time.

The goal? Get bat researchers out here to study this biodiversity hotspot and understand how my restoration work can better support these amazing animals.
