This is a video of Bobby Orr and Brad Park playing together on defense on the Boston Bruins power play during four games in the 1975-76 season.
The clips with audio are from WSBK TV-38 broadcasts, with Fred Cusick on play by play and Johnny Peirson on analysis. The clips with crowd noise only are film from the WCVB Collection, transferred by Northeast Historical Film. Thanks to NHF for the OK to post it with watermarks; for information on obtaining a clean copy visit www.oldfilm.org.
Orr and Park, two of the best defenseman to ever play the game, became teammates in early November of 1975 when the Bruins sent Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais to the Rangers for Park and Jean Ratelle in a blockbuster.
Bruins fans loved slot machine Espo and didn't like Park, so it took Park time to win them over. But Park has said that Orr was very gracious welcoming him to the team.
The idea was to have Orr and Park play together on the power play and penalty kill but on different pairings at even strength, to always have one of them on the ice. And if Orr's by-now badly damaged knees ever sidelined him, Boston still had Park.
Unfortunately, because Orr's knee locked up after a Nov. 26 game in New York, ending his season, the duo only played 10 games together. But in those contests the Bruins were 6-1-3, and they went an amazing 13 for 36 on the man-advantage (36.1 percent)!
Imagine if Orr had been able to play a few years with Park, who had several outstanding seasons as the next in a series of Hall of Fame Boston defensemen!
NOTES: This is a re-do, adding the North Stars and Kings games. They are in chronological order (Minnesota, at Atlanta, Toronto, Los Angeles) ... In some of the footage vs. the Kings, the Bruins actually have a five-on-three advantage, and for a few seconds of that some poor bastard drops his stick, then freezes the puck at the back of the net. Man was their tower being buzzed! ... The Bruins scored on the power play just before the Kings footage we see, but they didn't score five-on-three - although they do everything but put the biscuit in the basket. Fascinating to watch Park and Orr work the points ... The WCVB film is what's left after it being cut up for the 11 o'clock news, thus there aren't many goals in it. But as previously noted, the power play was really humming with the dynamic duo.
