Before you Buy - See - "The Air Force Guy"

Atwood Water Heater
Prior to turning on your water heater, make sure it is full of water by turning on the hot water side of a faucet. When it stops spitting and sputtering it is full. Never use the pressure relief valve to fill your water heater tank. If you are plugged into electric, turn the electric side of your water heater on first (if you have one with electric). Prior to turning on the propane side, turn on the burners of your LP stove top to bleed the LP lines of any air pockets.
