Passengers Shocked, Must See! Two MBTA Trains Operate Just Feet Apart on the Same Track

About this video: On March 17, 2025, I went to the JFK/UMass station in South Boston to capture an MBTA Middleboro extra equipment move led by PNLX 2107 and featuring various MBTA equipment being returned to the Readville yard from the Rochester shops in Wareham, MA. Also included was freshly rebuilt F40PH-3C 1055, which had recently returned from overhaul by MPI in Erie, PA. Due to PTC issues in the PNLX 2107 later in this train’s trip, they were restricted to 20 MPH coming into Boston after Braintree. This resulted in a traffic jam of scheduled commuter rail traffic behind them. As a result, they were followed immediately by a Boston-bound Middleboro train into the JFK/UMass station. This made for a sight that is incredibly rare to see in areas where PTC is enforced (which is most mainline tracks in the US). This was able to happen due to the dispatcher giving the following inbound permission to pass a stop signal in Quincy - this was done in order to keep the already delayed traffic flowing. The engineer of the following inbound used his judgement to maintain a consistent distance behind the leading equipment move as he came to a stop next to me. This video was originally going to be held for posting by myself to avoid any potential conflicts, but I have consulted with serval trusted individuals who have approved this for posting at this time. This footage is simply meant to highlight a fascinating railroading feat and was never for the purpose of getting any individuals in trouble.
