As part of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s commitment to building and empowering its workforce while contributing to the growth of Obuasi Mine and its host communities, a select team embarked on a 12-week Jumbo Operator Training Program in South Africa. This program focused on Jumbo drill rig operations, a critical component of underground mining activities, including face drilling and underground support.
The training, facilitated by Murray & Roberts Training Academy in partnership with MAC Partners Training Institute - MPTI, was meticulously planned to deliver a comprehensive learning experience. Trainees were selected through a rigorous process involving an aptitude test, Dover test, and face-to-face interviews.
Upon arrival in South Africa, the team was introduced to ultra-modern training facilities, enhancing their learning experience. The program provided in-depth knowledge of operating procedures, safety standards, maintenance, troubleshooting, and advanced drilling techniques. The trainees also gained insights into other Trackless Mobile Machines (TMMs).
Despite challenges such as adapting to new weather, food, and operational standards, the team mastered critical skills, including tramming and controlling boom levers, working at height, firefighting, underground traffic management, and identifying harmful gases.
Looking ahead, the trainees aim to share their knowledge, train future operators, and contribute to AngloGold Ashanti’s vision of sustainability while leaving a lasting impact on the mining industry.
