Based on the novel by Ernest Haycox, this gripping Technicolor Western stars the iconic Randolph Scott as Owen Merritt, a small-time rancher who finds himself targeted by a ruthless, wealthy land baron named Will Isham (Alexander Knox). The conflict is deeply personal: Isham has recently married Nan Melotte (Joan Leslie), a woman who was once in love with Merritt but chose Isham for his wealth and status. Driven by jealousy and greed, Isham hires a gang of cutthroats to drive Merritt off his land. Merritt must fight back to save his ranch and his life, leading to a series of violent confrontations in the rugged wilderness. The film is celebrated for its atmospheric cinematography and a brutal, climactic shootout in a mountain storm. The cast also features Ellen Drew and Richard Rober.
