I turned a simple tin of minced beef and onion into a proper old-school cottage pie.
This is cheap comfort food done right — rich beef gravy, fluffy mash on top, and no fancy ingredients.
If you’ve got:
• a tin of mince
• potato flakes
• and 30 minutes
…you’ve got dinner.
This is real, everyday cooking, perfect for tight budgets, quick meals, and anyone who loves British comfort food.
No shortcuts. No nonsense. Just a proper cottage pie — better than the tin on its own.

Ingredients (Serves 2)
Beef Filling
• Tinned minced beef & onion (Princess) — 392 g
• Butter or oil — 1 tbsp | 14 g
• Tomato purée — 1 tbsp | 15 g
• Worcestershire sauce — 1 tsp | 5 ml
• Beef stock (from cube) — 120 ml | ½ UK cup | ½ US cup
• Plain flour (optional, thickening) — 1 tsp | 3 g
• Black pepper — ¼ tsp | 0.5 g
• Dried thyme (optional) — ¼ tsp | 0.3 g
• Marmite/Vegemite — 1 tsp (optional)
Mash Topping (Ideal Thickness)
• Potato flakes — 70 g | ~¾ UK cup | ~¾ US cup
• Boiling water — 300 ml | 1¼ UK cups | 1¼ US cups
• Butter — 1½ tbsp | 20 g
• Milk (optional) — 1–2 tbsp | 15–30 ml
• Salt — ¼ tsp | 1.5 g
• White or black pepper — to taste

Bake at 200 °C / 180 °C fan / 400 °F for 20–25 minutes until bubbling and golden.
(Optional) Grill/broil 2–3 minutes for extra colour.
