Martin Ericsson is an Emmy-winning game and transmedia designer. At Alibis for Interaction, he gave a stirring talk about the magical (or possibly quite scientific) powers of participatory story-telling. Role-taking in an interactive environment can, in some sense, truly change us – allowing us to overcome ourselves, lose ourselves, and find ourselves.
As immersive entertainment forms converge with interactive storytelling, it makes sense to look to analog role-playing, especially games experienced live in 360° environments, for inspiration. While Ericsson views larp (live-action roleplaying) as just another instance of an ancient tradition, he also argues persuasively that it is the future.
