I Planted a Tree in My Yard — HOA Karen Said It ‘Threatened Property Values’!
It was just a sapling.
A young red maple—planted on my own soil, watered with my own hands, meant to grow for my kids to climb and shade their future porch swings.
But to the HOA president? That little tree was a “hostile ecological intrusion.”
Her email called it “an unapproved vertical structure” that “casts non-compliant shadows” and—her words—“threatens the uniform aesthetic and long-term property values of the community.”
Within 48 hours, I got a violation notice:
“Remove the tree or face $200/day in fines… until compliance.”
I refused.
So she escalated:
— Had it measured, photographed, and labeled in a “landscape audit.”
— Filed a formal complaint with the county (which they dismissed).
— Even tried to claim the roots were “trespassing” into common areas… that didn’t exist.
That’s when I invited a local arborist, a climate scientist, and a retired judge to host “Tree Day” in my yard—complete with kids planting native seedlings and a banner that read:
“This Tree Is Protected by Nature… and the 5th Amendment.”
Stay until the end—you’ll see the HOA board vote unanimously to ban fines for trees… after city officials declare my maple part of a “carbon-offset pilot program.”
