1 in 5 adults in Sarasota County struggles with basic English or foundational literacy skills. Many are juggling multiple jobs, raising families, and simply don’t have the time, money, or transportation to attend traditional adult education programs.
The Literacy Council of Sarasota (LCS) provides a flexible, effective alternative. Through one-on-one tutoring and small-group instruction, LCS helps adults build the reading, writing, English, and life skills they need to thrive.
What We Offer
• Small Group Classes
Held at the Glasser/Schoenbaum Human Services Center or partner locations, classes serve up to 12 adult learners and meet once or twice weekly for 60–90 minutes. All classes are led by ProLiteracy-trained instructors.
• One-on-One Tutoring
Volunteer tutors meet individually with adult learners in public places like libraries for at least 90 minutes a week. Instruction is customized to each learner’s goals.
Core Programs
• Adult Basic Education (ABE)
• General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Prep
• English as a Second Language (ESL)
LCS empowers adults to improve their communication skills, expand their opportunities, and achieve their personal, professional, and educational goals.
