After a stormy night on Lake Sakakawea, photographer and adventurer Dirk Rohrbach returns to the river and paddles toward Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota. Just beyond Bismarck begins Lake Oahe, the longest reservoir on Dirk's journey, stretching roughly 400 kilometers. After endless days of difficult progress, he reaches Pierre, the capital of South Dakota.

"River Angels" welcome Dirk in their kayaks on the next lake and invite him to explore the untouched prairie on horseback. After weeks of slow paddling with no current for almost 1,000 miles, Dirk arrives at the last dam in Yankton, South Dakota. From this point, the river flows unimpeded toward the Gulf of Mexico, which he will reach after another 3,000 kilometers. It is the longest free-flowing waterway in America, where Dirk's journey will change dramatically.
