On the slopes of Wanale Ridge in eastern Uganda, farmers are learning how to grow more food, improve their soil, and build secure futures for their families.
This film explores the agricultural vocational training programme run by Evergreen Africa, which equips local farmers with practical, sustainable farming skills. Participants are trained in how to make the best use of small plots of land, choose the right crops, care for them effectively, and avoid wasting seed - using a simple principle: use a little, reap a lot.
Graduates of the programme receive a starter pack of tools and seeds, enabling them to immediately put their learning into practice. Central to the training is organic farming -0 using locally made natural manure from materials such as cow dung and ash, rather than chemical fertilisers. This approach restores soil health, improves yields, and protects the land for future generations.
Often referred to locally as “farming God’s way”, the programme emphasises stewardship, sustainability, and working with nature rather than against it. Farmers report dramatically improved harvests, healthier crops, and increased food security. Many families are now able to feed themselves, avoid buying food from shops, and pay school fees for their children - something that was previously out of reach.
The video also shows Evergreen Africa’s market garden, established on half an acre of previously dry, depleted land. Through organic methods and careful land management, the soil has been restored and now supports thriving crops such as maize, bananas, and vegetables - generating income to help fund Evergreen’s wider community programmes.
This is long-term change rooted in knowledge, dignity, and respect for the land - and a powerful example of how sustainable agriculture can transform entire communities.
