Social anxiety is a common issue that affects millions worldwide. In the United States alone, about 7% of the population—roughly 15 million people—struggle with social anxiety disorder (SAD). It's one of the most common mental health conditions, second only to specific phobias.
Globally, the prevalence of social anxiety disorder is estimated to be around 4%, but many more experience social anxiety in less severe forms. Despite its widespread nature, only about 36% of those with social anxiety disorder seek treatment, often due to fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
Social anxiety typically begins in adolescence, with about 75% of individuals developing it between the ages of 8 and 15. Without intervention, it can persist into adulthood, leading to significant impairments in daily functioning, including difficulties in personal relationships, education, and work.
