A note on translation 💛

Translating can be a bit tricky, because it’s more than just finding the right words — it’s about carrying tone, emotion, and intent across languages. I often adjust or omit certain phrases to make subtitles easier to follow while still staying true to the heart of what’s being said.

A frequent challenge for me is deciding how literal to be. Should I stay neutral, or let the emotional undercurrent shape the wording? This comes up a lot — especially with Smart’s naturally flirtatious tone, which can be interpreted in so many different ways 🙈

In this clip, there’s a line where the Thai word “คน” (khon) appears. It can mean either “person” or “people”, but when said without a clarifier, it usually refers more broadly to people in general. I know there are many clips going around translating it as “that person” — which absolutely adds an emotional touch, especially in the SmartBoom context and within our Auralis fandom — but that interpretation introduces a personal assumption that isn’t explicitly present in the grammar.

I thought long and hard about how to translate this line, but I always try to stay consistent in how I approach all my SmartBoom translations. Don’t get me wrong — I would love for Boom to have explicitly said “that person”, but grammatically, we’d need a clarifier for that. For example, Boom could have said คนนั้น (khon nán), but no matter how many times I listen, I don’t hear it.

Even with a bundle of nerves (since I’m not a native Thai speaker and I know how passionate we all are about these moments), I chose to stay closer to the neutral, grammatical meaning in this case.

Please know that I completely respect the other translation — this is just one example of the broader balancing act in translation: between literal meaning and emotional tone. Both interpretations can be absolutely valid, depending on the intention and emotion we bring to the words ☺️
