In today’s video, I break down one of the most important mental skills in golf: understanding the difference between controllables and uncontrollables. This is a concept I teach regularly at our performance camps, and it has a huge impact on how players manage themselves on the course.
Golf is a game full of variables you can’t control — the wind, the bounce, the lie, the greens, your playing partners, or even the behaviour of your golf ball once it leaves the clubface. When golfers focus too much on these uncontrollables, frustration grows, decision-making suffers, and performance becomes inconsistent.
That’s why it’s essential to shift your attention toward the things you can control, such as:
✔️ Your pre-shot routine
✔️ Your process and intention for every shot
✔️ Your attitude, body language, and breathing
✔️ Your commitment to the chosen target
✔️ How you respond after a poor swing or bad break
During the camp, we had a really valuable discussion with the players on identifying where their focus goes during a round and how often it drifts toward things they can’t influence. The goal is to help them build awareness, stay present, and develop the composure needed to perform under pressure.
The core message:
Great golf comes from managing yourself, not the uncontrollable conditions aound you. When you learn to anchor your attention to the controllables and let go of everything else, your consistency, confidence, and scoring immediately improve.
