In this video, Grant Stevens explains how to develop a Fighter’s Physique and includes a full workout routine to help you achieve that goal.
Because there is a specific physique that a real fighter will exhibit. While movies show boxers and martial artists with bodybuilder proportions (think Rocky 4, The Warrior, Dragon Ball, Tekken), this actually isn’t optimal for generating power or fighting for sustained bouts.
Rather, the fighter’s physique is the natural consequence of moving and training as a martial artist. Fighters have large powerful shoulders, for throwing punches. But they also have surprisingly developed lats for quickly snapping the arm back into place.
A fighter needs an extremely powerful core for generating and transmitting power into the extremities from the ground. That means both rotational strength and flexion/anti-extension. And, of course, power generation begins at the legs making powerful thighs and hips equally common.
Likewise, a fighter needs to be relatively lean. The amount of cardio needed to perform for sustained bouts means that too much muscle can become detrimental.
So, the fighter’s physique is about efficient and sustained power output. And while that’s not a typical “bodybuilder” look, it’s still highly aesthetic and desirable. It looks lean, mean, and built for performance - like a sports car!
Enjoy!
