Paul shows his method of using the Pen & Wash watercolour technique to paint buildings which end up with a very sketchy and dynamic feel to them. His subject is the George Inn in Lacock, Wiltshire, UK.
Paul starts by describing the art tools and materials he uses and follows this by his thoughts on how best to sketch the building and why he uses both waterproof and non-waterproof inks.
The final part to his sketch is the introduction of people into the scene - he starts the painting by establishing their 'presence' first, before then going onto to apply watercolour washes to the building.
Finally, he shows how he allows some of the washes to touch the non-waterproof ink so that the ink 'bleeds' into the painting giving warm shadows and dirt marks to the building's walls.
