TUTORIAL TO FOLLOW SOON.
This is a cover or Eric Clapton’s guitar parts on the 1970 Derek and the Dominoes recording of ‘Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out’. It was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida and was the first time that Duane Allman’s had recorded with the band.
According to Bobby Whitlock, the song was recorded in one take, including vocals, with no overdubs, and was essentially, therefore, a live recording. The line-up was Eric on guitar and vocals, Bobby on the organ, Duane on slide guitar, Jim Gordon on drums and Carl Radle on bass guitar.
Eric’s guitar was the 1956 sunburst Fender Stratocaster affectionately and famously known as ‘Brownie’, and he was playing through a Fender Champ. This simple yet brilliant combination can be heard throughout the whole of the album, ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs’.
For making this recording, I used the left side of the stereo, only, and cut out the right, the side that carries Eric’s guitar. The recording was made in Garageband.
Written by Jimmy Cox in 1923, Nobody Know You When You’re Down And Out very quickly became a blues standard. It has been performed by a host of great artists over the years, from Bessie Smith and Count Basie, to Nina Simone and Otis Redding.
I will shortly be making a tutorial (or two, if needs be) to accompany this video.
This is a great number for working on your timing, precision and, especially, string bending.
