This is the full version of the Netherton Tunnel walk that I did recently, in the Black Country.

Netherton Tunnel is the last canal tunnel built in Britain, notable for its late construction date (1855-1858) and its unusual width with two towpaths, which allowed for two-way boat traffic and relieved congestion at the older, narrower Dudley Tunnel. The tunnel is 3,027 yards (2,768 meters) long, was originally lit by gas, and features ventilation shafts known as "pepper pots". 

Construction and purpose:
• Built to relieve congestion: It was constructed to ease bottlenecks at the adjacent Dudley Tunnel, which had severe waiting times due to its narrow, single-lane design.
• Two-way traffic: Netherton Tunnel was built with two towpaths, each 8.2 meters wide, allowing two boats to pass each other, one in each direction.
• Last canal tunnel: It was the last major canal tunnel built in Britain, opening on August 20, 1858. 

Features and design:
• Length: The tunnel is 3,027 yards (2,768 meters) or (1.72)Miles long.
• Ventilation: It is equipped with air vents called "pepper pots" that provide ventilation and allow light into the tunnel. The greatest depth of the shafts is 344 ft (105 m) and the least depth is 65 ft (20 m). 
• Lighting: It was originally lit with gas lighting, later converted to electricity, though it is now unlit.
• Kept in its original state: Many of the original features, including chainage markers on the eastern wall and evidence of the original gas lighting, can still be seen.
• Grade II listed building: The tunnel is a Grade II listed building. 
The tunnel cost £302,000 as opposed to the £238,000 estimate prior to construction. The main reason for the project being overbudget was the extra works necessitated by the condition of the ground through which the tunnel passes.
Netherton Tunnel has eight air vents, which are visible as cylindrical "pepper pot" shafts above ground. Although 17 shafts were originally sunk during construction, only eight were left open for ventilation after the tunnel was completed.
