In today’s installment, we go searching for salmon in a place where salmon have no business being: a highland creek framed by Adak’s stubborn little valley of trees. The mission is simple—walk upstream until either the water runs out, the dog runs out, or the camera battery runs out.
Along the way:
• Eagles patrol the canyon like extras on a very tight budget.
• Relics appear—a gear here, a gasket there—suggesting some long-lost vehicle took the wrong turn decades ago.
• The filmmaker falls, breaks a piece of audio equipment, and carries on anyway, because of course he does.
The fish, when finally discovered, are improbably high, glowing red against the current, like punctuation marks in an otherwise forgotten paragraph. And so the day ends with no great conclusion, except the usual: it was worth it.
00:00 – Prologue, in the Wind
A creek, a camera, and a man walking twice as far as necessary.
02:10 – Act I: The Trees Are Not the Point
Past the favorite grove, where salmon should not be, but maybe are.
05:40 – Act II: Blockages, Real and Imagined
Rocks, branches, and one mysterious cable.
08:15 – Act III: A Hard Limit (That Isn’t)
The canyon insists on going farther, so of course we do.
12:00 – Act IV: Relics in the Grass
Gears, gaskets, and the ghost of a Jeep that didn’t quite make it.
16:20 – Act V: The Long Walk Upstream
Eagles overhead. No fish below. Suspicion grows.
20:45 – Act VI: A Salmon in the Sky
At nearly 450 feet, the improbable appears—brighter than expected, lonelier than imagined.
24:30 – Epilogue: Speechless Again
Broken audio, but not broken wonder. The day concludes exactly as it began—with wind, shadows, and a camera carried too far.
