Autism is a psychiatric disorder that affects one in fifty-nine children in the United States. With no current biological tests to detect autism, Dr. Karen Parker showed that cerebrospinal fluid, which is representative of the brain’s biochemistry, can allow us to detect autism biologically, months before children’s behavior manifests. Her objective is to develop multiple biomarkers to enable earlier detection of autism and also to respond to the heterogeneity or several symptoms of autism.
