What did Americans actually do to Pizza?

"Americans ruined pizza and then went to claim that they invented it, how dare they!" This is a sentiment often echoed among food purists, mostly on the Eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean. However, is this true, and was it just the US Americans? Could it be that Latin Americans did their part too to make pizza the globally loved food it is today, and might this part be bigger than they often get credit for?
