Leaving the mountains behind, we head off on a peaceful journey from YHA Brecon Beacons down to the charming village of Talybont-on-Usk.
This isn't your typical mountain scramble; instead, we’re exploring the "quiet side" of the Bannau Brycheiniog. This route takes us through winding country lanes, hidden footpaths, and past quaint Welsh cottages before joining the iconic Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal.
If you love the sound of rushing streams, historic stone bridges, and the slow pace of a canal-side stroll, this hike is for you. It’s the perfect way to see the transition from the high peaks to the lush, green valleys of Mid-Wales.
On the trail today:
The Descent: Leaving the foothills of the central Beacons.
Village Life: Passing through some of the prettiest, quietest hamlets in the area.
The "Mon & Brec" Canal: Walking the towpath into Talybont—often called one of the most beautiful canals in the UK.
Talybont-on-Usk: Finishing in this vibrant village, famous for its drawbridges and cozy pubs.
As part of a 60 miles "loop" of the Brecon Beacons National Park, we planned to traverse it in 3 days or so, with each day a different "flavour"
