Video of CT Transit's New Flyer XD40 2057 (in express service configuration) operating on the 24 on its former alignment between Windsor RR Station and Windsor Locks RR Station, via Poquonock Park & Ride and Bradley International Airport. Service on this route operated under this alignment until August 22nd, 2025. On August 24th, service was officially restructured to operate only between the Windsor Locks RR Station and Bradley Airport, with a new branch along Elm Street in Windsor Locks.
Service on this route began as part of CT Transit's Hartford Area restructuring in August 2022. The former 905E/W/915 pattern was consolidated into the 905, with no local service to residential areas of Windsor Locks, only the park & ride. Formerly these areas were served by the 905W during rush hours only. The resources to operate the 905 were instead redistributed to create the 24, creating a suburban route and rail link to/from Bradley Airport. The 30 and 34 were restructured in order to cover 905 service at the Poquonock Park & Ride and Kennedy Road (which only the former is served on a very limited scale for service to/from Enfield).
Service was discontinued between Windsor RR station and Bradley Airport due to low ridership, and to provide more frequent service to Windsor Locks for better rail connections. This change was also done in anticipation of the new Windsor Locks RR station opening sometime this fall. The new station is more closely situated to its commercial / downtown area. The routes will be revised again later this fall when the new station opens.
Looking at the timetable and route map at the time, it was a surprise when the bus got onto I-91 after the Park & Ride stop. I was expecting the bus to take Main Street to the station but was surprised when it got onto I-91. While detours tend to not throw me off, I wondered if the operator forgot about me for a split second and started deadheading, hence why you see a brief lapse in that area. Ultimately she got off at the next exit and everything was fine. The route maps suggested some type of turnaround or u-turn at the railroad station, which I later found after getting off the bus that it was not feasible. It is not a legal maneuver and would be downright dangerous if a bus attempted to make a u-turn because of the hilly terrain, curves, and lack of visibility looking down the road near the 'T' intersection along with the speed limit through that area. The new route maps on the timetable clarify the route as going via I-91 to get to the current RR station.
