Watergang Kwartet is a curious ensemble with clarinet, trumpet, trombone and double bass based in Amsterdam.
They dive into the rich sounds of Eastern European folk music and bring them to life in their own way.
Their music teases the boundary until it becomes unclear. Where does classical end, and folk begin?
Berio’s Azerbaijan Love Song is the final movement of his 1964 song cycle Folk Songs. The piece is based on the Azerbaijani melody Qalalıyam Qalalı that Berio’s wife, Cathy Berberian, discovered on an old record. Since she did not speak Azerbaijani, her vocal line became a phonetic transcription of the sounds she heard.
