Highest Shiva Temple: Located at an altitude of approximately 3,680 meters (12,073 feet), the Tungnath Temple holds the record for being the highest Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Part of Panch Kedar: Tungnath is the third of the five sacred temples (Panch Kedar) believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata epic. The legend states that after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sin of killing their kin. To avoid them, Shiva took the form of a bull. When the Pandavas found him, he disappeared into the ground, with his body parts reappearing at five different locations. Tungnath is the site where his arms (bahu) are said to have emerged.
The Trek: The journey to Tungnath is a moderate-level trek that begins from the picturesque village of Chopta. The trail is about 3.5 km long and is well-paved, making it accessible to most people with a reasonable level of fitness. The path winds through lush meadows (bugyals) and dense rhododendron forests, offering stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks.
Chandrashila Peak: Most trekkers extend their journey to the Chandrashila Peak, which is a further 1.5 km and a steeper climb from the Tungnath temple. Chandrashila, meaning "Moon Rock," offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of prominent Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath. It's particularly famous for its spectacular sunrise views.
Tungnath is not just a pilgrimage site but also a paradise for nature lovers and trekkers, offering a unique blend of spiritual significance and natural beauty.
