From Mountain to Masterpiece | The Making of Carrara Marble in Italy

Australian natural stone specialists CDK Stone recently hosted Marble in the Making—an exclusive experience that invited 16 Australian architects and designers to Italy’s Carrara region to witness marble at its source.

Set in the Apuan Alps of Tuscany, Carrara’s quarries have been operating for over 2,000 years, producing some of the world’s most revered white marble. CDK Stone has maintained a presence in the region for more than 40 years, with director Tony Victor personally selecting stone on regular visits for over two decades. “We travel extensively, ensuring we inspect almost every block we bring back to Australia,” Tony says. “Typically, we select between one and five per cent of production from any given material.”

In recent years, CDK Stone’s architectural stone consultants have joined these buying trips—a practice that sparked the idea to extend the opportunity to the broader design community. Timed with Milan Design Week 2025, Marble in the Making brought together practitioners from Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland to explore the quarries, deepen their material knowledge, and experience the full story behind the stone they specify.
