The confiscation failed to suppress the vitality of religious genres in Spanish musical life. The Stabat Mater composed in the 1830s by Nicolás Ledesma, chapel master of the Collegiate Church of Bilbao, occupies a prominent place in the panorama of 19th-century sacred music in Spain. Its annual performance on Good Friday in the capital of Vizcaya, as well as the posthumous tributes dedicated to the composer, attest to the notoriety achieved by this work, which until now had been unjustifiably forgotten.
