For best power and performance on your bike, your ankle should flex and extend between 18-24 degrees while pedalling. If you have less than this you will lose natural neuromuscular triple extension function. If you have more than this you will be losing power from all major muscle groups in your legs.
While pedalling drills and technique coaching have proven to be ineffective in the short term to improve efficiency, bike fit changes and particularly optimising your saddle position will be very beneficial.
Finding your ankle range of motion is actually quite easy. It can be done using your phone camera set up along side an indoor trainer, then using freely available protractor apps.
