Disused Railway Explore - Blackburn Valley Trail Sheffield. Meadowhall to Chapeltown.
The Blackburn Valley Chatrail is now part of the Trans-Pennine Trail cycle path.
We take a journey down the old Great Central Railway, starting at the current Meadowhall station in Sheffield. The line opened as the South Yorkshire Railway, until being absorbed into the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1864. This then became the Great Central Railway (Woodbourne Junction to Aldham branch).
As we start along the path, we come across our first of four disused stations. Meadow Hall (two words) - later to be renamed Meadow Hall & Wincobank. Like all the stations we see, it closed in the 1950s upon the closure of the line to passengers.
After around a mile of passing between several factories we burst out in to the open and the former Grange Lane station and level crossing. Some remains of platform can still be seen.
Another mile or so later is Ecclesfield East station. Not a lot left of the station and the site is also now fenced off.
We continue towards Chapeltown and a slight diversion as the old line is taken up by industrial unit.
Once we get to Chapeltown, the leave the trail and head up in to Parkin Wood to take a look at the old Chapeltown Central (Chapeltown & Thorncliffe) station. The station and grounds are now private and not accessible, however we can see the station building from the hill above within the woods. Further on in the woods is and old signal gantry. A great piece of history left untouched in the woods.
The line opened in 1854. As with the majority of the Great Central Railway, passenger service ceased due to low passenger numbers in the 1950s. Freight services continued on the line until the M1 was built cutting the north end of the line off. Until the early 1980s, the southern end from Meadowhall to Chapeltown was still used as a freight line to nearby collieries and works.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.
