This is a problem solving screencast in organic chemistry using IR, MS and NMR to solve for an unknown structure. A good strategy when tasked with determining the structure of an unknown is to first find out the degrees of unsaturation (DOU) from the molecular formula. If you are given the DOU, then use the general alkane molecular formula CnH2n+2 to determine what the molecular formula should be for n carbons.
