Remembering Flame Test Colors with Japanese Wordplay
炎色反応(enshoku han'nou) flame test
In Japanese schools, students often use mnemonics to remember the flame colours of different metal ions.
Lithium(Li) リチウム = red → riakā (handcart)
Sodium(Na) ナトリウム = yellow → naki (no or without)
Potassium(K) カリウム = purple → K-mura (‘K village’)
Copper(Cu) 銅(dou) = green → dōryoku (source of power or prime mover)
Calcium(Ca) カルシウム = orange → karutō (try to borrow)
Strontium(Sr) ストロンチウム = crimson red → surumo kurenai (to try to do something, but they don't give it)
Barium(Ba) バリウム = yellow-green → bariki (horsepower)
リアカーなきK村、動力借るとうするもくれない馬力
(リアカーを持っていないK村が、他の村に動力を借りようとするも、動力をくれない。馬力でいこう!)
K Village, which does not have a handcart, tries to borrow (motive )power from other villages, but they do not give any power. Let's go with horsepower!
