We're assembling the XLeRobot, an open-source DIY household robot that's designed to be cheap, easy to build, and use parts available worldwide. What we thought would take 4 hours ended up taking us 3 whole weeks. In this video I'll walk you through our complete journey from ordering parts to the final assembly, including all the mistakes we made so you don't have to repeat them.
This XLeRobot build started simple enough, but things got complicated fast. Finding a good 3D printer, dealing with poor quality prints from different machines, and especially the logistics nightmare of sourcing all the components became our biggest challenges. The hardest part of that DIY assembly wasn't the mechanical parts or electronics - it was finding things like USB cables and wheels that took weeks to arrive.
We document everything in this robot assembly tutorial: printing and finishing the 3D printed robot parts, assembling the XLeRobot arms with all their servos, building the omnidirectional wheel base, mounting cameras and electronics, our custom construction modifications to improve stability, calibrating the servos (which we initially did wrong), and finally getting the DIY robot moving and performing pick-and-place tasks. For now just by teleoperation, but in future we going to enable AI agent and VLA models for it.
The XLeRobot is an embodied AI platform and open source robot alternative to expensive humanoids. If you're planning your own XLeRobot build or working on any robotics project with Raspberry Pi and 3D printed parts, this video shows the real process with all the problems we encountered.
If you passionate about embodied AI, robotics, and robot control alghorithms, that platform will be good training base for training VLA models and making other robotic intelligence experiments.
