Improving Knee Flexion - PT1

Many people affected by MS, stroke, and other neurologic conditions are affected with knees that DO NOT BEND WELL. A lack of Knee Flexion or your brain’s ability to bend your knee can be super limiting and can prevent you from walking, doing daily activities, and exercising like you want.

If you experience EXTENSOR SPASTICITY: your quads (knee extensors) are over-active and your hamstrings cannot counteract the spasticity. If you experience KNEE HYPEREXTENSION: your hamstrings are extremely underactive and cannot counteract knee extension thereby allowing too much extension in your upper leg.

In order to counteract LOW KNEE FLEXION / HYPEREXTENSION, we need to teach your brain to get better at KNEE FLEXION (bending):

First and foremost, before doing these exercises:
1. You need to foam roll or use a handheld myofascial release tool to massage out the overactive quadricep (thigh) muscles.
2. Then, I would recommend doing a seated, kneeling, or side lying quad stretch to stretch those overactive muscles.

In Part 1 of this Knee Flexion exercises for MS series we will be learning the SEATED KNEE FLEXION or HEEL SLIDE.

*** NOTE: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS IN SOCKS ON A NON-CARPETED FLOOR to reduce as much friction as possible.

As you practice this drill, use a range of motion that you can CONTROL. If you slide out too far, your brain may not know how to pull your leg back in yet.
Take this slow and seriously, SMALL, SHORT movements will have BIG PAYOFF if you do these right.
