Within the gaming economy state of Nevada, the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling estimates that up to 6% of resident adults may struggle with problem gambling behavior.
However, little is known about problem gambling within the LGBTQIA+ community. While LGBTQIA+ individuals tend to have greater rates of stigma-related mental health and addiction issues when compared to the general population, literature surrounding problem gambling within this community is inconclusive, and limited data exists about problem gambling prevalence among LGBTQIA+ Nevadans.
Utilizing the NORC Diagnostic Screen for Gambling Problems-Self Administered (NODS-SA) measure, this study seeks to better understand problem gambling within Nevada’s LGBTQIA+ community. A convenience sample of 308 participants were recruited over the span of approximately two months by leveraging community partnerships, local outreach, and social media.
