Dún an Óir in Smerwick Harbour is now a beautiful and peaceful place. 400 years ago it was a site of a brutal massacre. In 1580 a force of around 600 Italians and Spaniards landed here. Outnumbered and outgunned by the English force which soon besieged them, the siege of the fort only lasted a few days. Afterwards most of the prisoners were massacred. One of the numerous atrocities carried out by Elizabethan forces in Ireland.
