The Czech First League, officially known as the Fortuna Liga due to sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier football competition in the Czech Republic. Established in 1993, following the split of Czechoslovakia, it has evolved into a highly competitive league with 16 teams. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the second-tier Czech National Football League. The champion of the Czech First League qualifies for European competitions, notably the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, while other top teams enter the Europa Conference League.
Historically, clubs like Sparta Prague, Slavia Prague, and Viktoria Plzeň have dominated the league, with Slavia and Sparta especially known for their fierce rivalry, representing the two largest cities in the country. The league is known for producing strong domestic talent, and clubs often see their best players move to larger European leagues. While the competition has struggled with financial challenges and infrastructural issues, it remains a crucial part of Czech football culture and continues to develop both local talent and international recognition.
