The Czechoslovak First League was the top football competition in Czechoslovakia from 1918 until the country split in 1993. It included clubs from both the Czech and Slovak regions, with the most dominant teams usually coming from Prague, such as Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague. Sparta was the league’s most successful club with 21 titles, followed by Dukla Prague with 11, and Slovan Bratislava with 8. The league was known for its competitive nature and intense rivalries, especially the one between Sparta and Slavia.
After Czechoslovakia peacefully split in 1993, the league was replaced by two separate national competitions: the Czech First League and the Slovak Super Liga. This ended the shared football tradition, but the league’s legacy continues to influence both countries’ football cultures. Legendary players like Josef Bican, who scored more than 400 goals in his career, became icons of the league and are still remembered as some of the greatest goal scorers in football history.
