3 Most Rare Australian Cars That Will Blow Your Mind!
We'll discover three of Australia's most incredible and rare cars that most people have never heard about! These amazing machines show how Australian engineers and designers created vehicles that could compete with the best from around the world.
First up is the Matich SR4, a stunning race car from the late 1960s built by Australian engineer and driver Frank Matich. This speed demon packed a powerful 5.0-liter Repco-Brabham V8 engine that produced a whopping 580 horsepower! The SR4 dominated Australian racing, winning 15 out of 19 races and setting multiple track records. What makes it super rare? Only one was ever built, and it completely crushed the competition in the 1969 Australian Sports Car Championship by winning all three races!
Next is the mysterious Giocattolo Group B from the mid-1980s. Created by Australian businessman Paul Halstead and designed by former Formula One engineer Barry Lock, this supercar started life as an Alfa Romeo but was transformed into a mid-engine beast powered by a Holden 5.0-liter V8. With 300 horsepower and weighing just 2,392 pounds, it could hit 62 mph in under 5 seconds and reach speeds of 160 mph! Only 15 were ever made, and today just 14 still exist, making it one of Australia's rarest automotive treasures.
Finally, meet the Holden Torana GTR XU-1, a giant-killer from the early 1970s. While other Australian race cars relied on big V8 engines, the Torana took a different approach with its lightweight design and modified straight-six engine. The improved 1972 LJ model packed 190 horsepower and proved that bigger isn't always better when racing legend Peter Brock drove it to victory at the famous Bathurst 500, beating much more powerful V8 cars!
