Vought F4U Corsair
The Vought F4U Corsair was a fighter aircraft that was used primarily by the United States Navy and Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. It was known for its distinctive inverted gull-wing design, which allowed for a shorter landing gear and increased stability. The Corsair was highly successful in combat, with a kill-to-loss ratio of 11:1 in the Pacific theater.
The F4U Corsair was powered by a powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, which gave it a top speed of over 400 mph and excellent climbing ability. Its armament typically consisted of six .50 caliber machine guns and either bombs or rockets for ground attack missions.
The Corsair is perhaps best known for its role in the Pacific theater of World War II, where it was used for air superiority, close air support, and ground attack missions. It was also used by the British Royal Navy, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the French Navy, among others.
After World War II, the Corsair continued to be used in various conflicts around the world, including the Korean War and the First Indochina War. It was eventually retired from active service in the 1960s, but some examples are still flying today as part of airshows and private collections.
